Reclaiming the Prom Experience: A Recap of Our Southside Black LGBTQ+ Prom

On Saturday, May 18, the Haven Entertainment Center in Bronzeville, Chicago, was transformed into an enchanting, brave space for nearly 200 attendees through Lighthouse Foundation’s (LF) Black LGBTQ+ Prom. This wasn't just any prom—it was a celebration of resilience, empowerment, and unity within the Black LGBTQ+ community, a space where everyone was welcomed, cherished, and free to express themselves authentically.

At Lighthouse Foundation, part of our mission is to reinvent spaces that may have felt safe for our Black identities but not our Queer identities so that we can exist as our whole selves. The Black LGBTQ+ Prom embodied this mission, creating a night of music, dancing, and joy for those who may not have had the chance to do so in high school.

The event was DJ'd by Martin, a talented DJ who has been a staple in Chicago's music scene since 2013. He has since perfected his open-format DJ style, becoming a sought-after DJ at iconic queer venues like Hydrate Nightclub, D.S. Tequila, Progress Bar, Splash, and Joy District.

Encapsulating the joy of the evening, one attendee remarked, "I loved the music and the image of Blackness and Queerness and dance existing in one space."

LF staff members elected attendees who showcased their Black LGBTQ+ Pride to the prestigious Black LGBTQ+ Royal Court. This recognition goes beyond a mere title–it symbolizes the crucial role of visibility in uplifting and empowering our community. By celebrating those who boldly express their identities, we underscore the importance of representation and affirm the strength, resilience, and beauty of the Black LGBTQ+ community. Such moments of acknowledgment inspire others to embrace their true selves, fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment for everyone.

One attendee shared, "I learned that it is important to never think less of yourself because others think highly of you and that it is possible for many LGBTQ+ [people] to come together and have an amazing time!"

Another attendee appreciated the event's inclusiveness, stating, "I enjoyed that there was no dress code. It took pressure off of me to shop for brand new attire."

As we look back on this incredible evening, we are reminded of the power of creating spaces where our community can thrive as our whole selves. The Black LGBTQ+ Prom was a testament to our community's strength and beauty. We are excited to continue reclaiming spaces throughout the summer with our upcoming events, including the Pride Skate Party on June 8 and our Black LGBTQ+ Beach Day on June 22. Let’s continue celebrating our pride, resilience, and unity.

Thank you to everyone who made the Black LGBTQ+ Prom an unforgettable night. We look forward to creating more memories with you at our future events!
