Fostering Further Well-Being at August’s Self-Care Recharge
Another month, another Self-Care Recharge! Our most recent Self-Care Recharge event was a powerful testament to the strength of our community. This event series, which continues to grow in popularity, is designed to offer essential resources, reduce social isolation, and promote overall wellness for Black LGBTQ+ Chicagoans. At Lighthouse Foundation, we understand spirituality in a broad sense, encompassing emotional well-being, community building, and the cultivation of healthy practices.
This month, Self-Care Recharge introduced new and exciting sessions, including an art therapy workshop in partnership with Black Alphabet, and invigorating outdoor yoga and somatic movement classes. Each session was led by and for Black LGBTQ+ people and focused on creating supportive and healing environments for all who attended.
Held once again at Gallery Guichard in Bronzeville, this was our most well-attended Self-Care Recharge event to date, bringing together nearly 150 people. Attendees expressed deep appreciation for the variety of workshops available and the healing experiences they were able to access, all at no cost. Nia, one of the participants, shared, “I learned how I can lean into yoga as a Black woman. It’s always felt very inaccessible to me.” Another attendee, Keyia, reflected, “I liked how everyone was so open to receiving and giving; it’s wonderful to see [Black LGBTQ+] people on that frequency. I learned that it’s okay to take a break and recharge, getting back to yourself. It was an amazing experience to learn that [there’s] always a genuine community waiting for you.”
The event offered a holistic approach to wellness, with activities ranging from acupuncture and sound baths to nutritional coaching and small group therapy sessions. These sessions provided opportunities for participants to reconnect with their bodies and minds, explore creative outlets, and engage in meaningful conversations about mental health and self-care.
The August Self-Care Recharge was a day filled with healing, connection, and community. We are deeply grateful to everyone who joined us and helped make this event extraordinary. As we continue to grow this series, we look forward to providing even more opportunities for our community to come together, recharge, and thrive!
