Rolling into Pride: Lighthouse Foundation's Unforgettable 2023 Pride Skate Party

On a vibrant Saturday evening during Pride Month, Lighthouse Foundation of Chicagoland once again ignited joy, connection, and inclusivity at our highly anticipated event, the Pride Skate Party. Held on June 10th at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Roller Rink in Chicago's South Side neighborhood, the event marked our second consecutive Pride Skate Party and was a resounding success.

Gathering over 200 attendees, the Pride Skate Party proved to be a monumental occasion, achieving the remarkable feat of being our first sold-out event. The Pride Skate Party was not only a celebration of Pride Month but also an affirmation of the beauty and diversity that resides within the Black LGBTQ+ community. Attendees of all ages and identities came together to partake in an evening of fun and solidarity, enjoying free rollerskating, food, and bowling. The event exemplified our commitment to spirituality programming that not only uplifts but also serves as a powerful vehicle for dismantling racial barriers, healing wounds, and fostering a sense of belonging.

Reflecting on the experience, one attendee expressed their delight, saying, "I have not been skating in a long time. Sometimes these places can feel unwelcoming, and it was so good to feel safe enough to wear what I want and move how I feel. [I felt] so open and comfortable and free to just fly!"

Another attendee added, "[I liked] the fact that this was a space where Black Queer people were encouraged to express joy and playfulness, which we so often are told not to do."

For us, the Pride Skate Party has undoubtedly solidified its position as a cornerstone of our event calendar. The resonance it continues to achieve within the Black LGBTQ+ community underscores the importance of cultivating safe spaces that foster unity, self-acceptance, and genuine connection. We are grateful that evening was made possible through the unwavering support of the Chicago Department of Public Health, highlighting their commitment to funding programs that foster wellness for our community.

As the echoes of laughter, music, and camaraderie from the Pride Skate Party continue to reverberate, we as an organization are reminded that unity, joy, and acceptance can break down the barriers that too often divide us, fostering a world where everyone can truly shine in their authentic brilliance.
